We Welcome Trees!
Growing Trees. Reducing Poverty.
The Wajoli Foundation Community Reforestation Project is an environmental and livelihood initiative that was developed as an opportunity to improve both environment and income for subsistence farming families and communities.
The project has two goals:
1. Reverse the destruction of deforestation in northern Uganda.
2. Enable access to the carbon market for subsistence farming families in our community, so that they can financially benefit from growing and maintaining healthy trees.
Ensuring Reforestation is more profitable than Deforestation.
The Wajoli Foundation community-based reforestation project plants trees on non-forest cropland and grasslands in Gulu City, Gulu District and Amuru District. The project is reinvigorating the communities and supporting reforestation, providing healthy recovery for both vulnerable families and environment.
We work with smallholder land farmers to integrate planting of native trees such as Mahogany (Swietenia Macrophylla), Teak (Tectona Grandis), Mango (Mangifera indica), Mugavu (Albizia coriaria), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Shea Tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), Melina (Gmelina arborea), Mvule (Milicia excelsa), Avacado – Hass variety (Persea americana) and Beyo (Afzelia Africana) – within the local farmers agricultural and production systems.
The farmer owns the land. The farmer owns the trees. We track and buy from the farmer the carbon dioxide removals.
Through a world-class phone App, Tree growers can grow native trees and track their progress, to reliably remove Co2 from the atmosphere. The easy-to-use app provides accurate and verified data about carbon storage from every single tree, bringing credibility and transparency to the voluntary carbon market.
Local farmers can plant fruit and nut trees, as a food source for their family, and also do intercropping, to grow beans and groundnuts under the tree canopies. Combining the agricultural revenue with carbon credit revenue provides a more sustainable income for subsistence farming families.
By spearheading tree plantations and agroforestry, Wajoli Foundation and local farmers can show their willingness to protect the environment and become leaders in reforestation in northern Uganda. Furthermore, a long-lasting community partnership will ensure reforestation is more profitable than deforestation.
